Prayer
The life of the Christian should be one of prayer, but not one of self-directed prayer. Like so many important things in this life, it is something that we learn, but it is also a gift that it is given to us. We practice by using the prayers of the Church, primarily those in a prayer book. As we faithfully pray them, we learn the ways of speaking to God, we learn how to be in His presence, and we learn to hear His voice.
We should start small but be faithful in our prayers. When we have been faithful, we can ask for a blessing to do more. But by always striving to complete what we have been given, we learn obedience, humility, and perseverance.
It is expected that Orthodox Christians will begin their day with prayer, end their day with prayer, and seek to pray throughout the day as much as possible. In this way we come closer to the admonition of Saint Paul : "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)
It is also expected that those who wish to receive Holy Communion will have prayed the Order of Preparation for Holy Communion the night or morning before Communion.
