Almsgiving

Almsgiving is doing works of mercy. Sometimes that will take the form of providing financial assistance, but even a cup of cold water is an act of mercy which the Lord will reward. Almsgiving helps us to drive away greed, covetousness, and acquisitiveness while also rendering help to others and thereby doing good to the Lord Himself who identifies with the least among us.

It is not necessary for us to give what we do not have, but when we give out of Love for God and neighbor, God does not deprive us of any good thing but rather rewards us -- if not here and now, in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Almsgiving is different from giving to the Church, even though both help us to be less focused on financial and material wealth, and both are helpful to the one receiving. We should support the Church because it is the Body of Christ  which sustains us, helps us to grow, and gives us riches beyond measure in the Sacramental Life of the Church. Our gifts to the Church are our gifts to God who loves a cheerful giver.

For those who are looking for an outlet for works of mercy, we have partnered with Neighborworks who run a few different food pantries in the area. There are opportunities to give food or money as well as to serve directly in the pantries.
